Season 4 of Star Trek: The Next Generation seemed like the year of family. After quickly resolving the breathtaking cliffhanger of “The Best of Both Worlds,” the show took pains to show some of what the Federation was fighting for. We meet Picard’s brother, Data’s father, Tasha’s sister, and Worf’s adoptive human parents, plus an old flame with a surprise son in tow. The Klingon heritage subplot that begins here and builds to the cliffhanger finale (”Redemption”) would continue to the show’s end and through into Worf’s reappearance in Deep Space Nine.
The year also explored the implications of Data, Lwaxana Troi, Geordi, and Dr. Crusher being in love, while Miles O’Brien (given a first name at last) married Keiko. There were old friends revisited: the ubiquitous Q in a hilarious Robin Hood romp (”Qpid”), perennial screwup Reg Barclay (”Nth Degree”), and even the mysterious Traveler from season 1’s “Where No One Has Gone Before” (played by Eric Menyuk, who was nearly cast as Data). There were new races introduced who would have an important bearing on Trek’s destiny: the Cardassians and the Trill. Most of all, though, there were the one-off stories that impressed: “Clues,” with its memory-loss mystery; “Night Terrors,” with some genuine frights; and “Identity Crisis,” with possibly the only time Trek technology really helped Geordi solve a puzzle. Then right at the end, reinforcing the year’s familial theme, Denise Crosby returned as her own half-Romulan daughter! –Paul Tonks

Dr. Zachary Smith is a great character. Nobody on The next generation even comes close!!!!

My question for the Morons at Paramount is why do possibly glue the sticker seals the container with such strong stuff that you cannot avoid ruining the container when you remove it. May I remind that this a COLLETOR’S ITEM!!!!! Therefore if you damage it is WORTHLESS.

I LOVE Star Trek:TNG! It had to be (while it was on the air) and still is one of my all-time favorite shows. It has characters that are engaging, interesting, likeable and just plain well done. It also seems that the perfect actor was chosen for each part. I’ve become so attached to the show that it almost seems like the TNG crew are not strangers but old friends. I can honestly say, save for one aspect, that I love EVERYTHING about this show. I already own the first 3 seasons on DVD and I am buying them all as they are realesed.
Unfortunately even the best show on TV has it’s annoying aspect. The one person/character that this show could have done without is Wesley Crusher played by Wil Wheaton. If I was given a choice between watching a Wil Wheaton/W. Crusher TNG episode or sawing my own leg off with a rusty butter knife I’d probably go for the latter option. Unfortunately he happens to be involved in ONE of my favorite episodes (Remember Me).
Aside from that I REALLY love this show. Season 3 is truly the season when ST:TNG became a truly enjoyable show. The actors are finally comfortable with each other and have fully developed their characters interactions as well. But I must say that Season 4 is the absolute crown jewel in the TNG world. I eagerly anticipate the Sept. 3rd release date of the shows best year.

“The Drumhead” alone is worth the cost of this package. In my top
5 or so episodes of the entire series.

Season 4 is a terrific season for TNG however the low rating is due to manufactors problems with disk 1. I was unable to play the episodes ‘Brothers’ and ‘Suddenly Human’ on my DVD player. Both episodes were extremely jumpy. The picture was highly pixilized and the sound came out distorted. I thought it might be the DVD player so I played the disk on my DVD-ROM to see if the same thing would happen and the DVD would not play at all. I tried cleaning the disk and still had the same problems.
